Southern Vittles
For a low key evening and hearty servings, try Southern Vittles. Pick up a menu as
you enter and follow the picket fence to the kitchen to place your
order. Collect your utensils from the counter and take a seat at a vinyl covered
booth or table. While you wait for your food, check out the miniature lighted castles
on top of the air duct.
We ate at Southern Vittles two weeks in a row. The first night
the choices were country style steak and gravy, turkey brown
sandwich (open face turkey on texas toast with gravy), fried bologna, and meatloaf.
The second night (the next week) the turkey brown sandwich was gone, replaced by
apple baked pork chop or grilled chicken in tomato sauce--a tough decision for Andre,
but he went with the chicken because it came with rice. Vegetable choices were
potato pancakes, fried potatoes and onions, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, and
fried green tomatoes. The second week the last two veggies were replaced by turnip
greens, pinto beans, and fried okra. Homemade banana pudding was available both weeks,
and Andre got it both times (the rest of our party were too stuffed for dessert).
I always get the country style steak, with mashed potatoes and brown gravy.
The mashed potatoes are hearty and real--you can tell by the occasional bits of solid
potato. The corn, I found rather tasteless. Andre liked the fried green tomatoes and
raved about the potato pancakes, but
they ran out the second week so he got mashed potatoes and greens instead. Gameboy
came with us the second week and enjoyed the fried bologna sandwich--very filling--lettuce,
tomato, and mayonnaise, with a slice of bologna at least a half inch thick.
We'll be back! We always leave clean plates behind.
