Short Takes
The Opposite of Sex Yes. Quirky film on the
difference between love and lust. Christina
Ricci as the quintessinal
bad girl. Brief male-male kissing, not as disturbing as Lyle Lovett
kissing Lisa Kudrow.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
On Video
Yes. The surprises lie in the quirky characters, not in the plot
(which is pretty much revealed from the start). Uga is a supporting character.
Ransom
the original on cable
Yes. See Glen Ford sweat. See Donna Reed have hysterics. See Leslie Nielsen act serious.

The Opposite of Sex
Andre and I saw this one at the Terrace. The projector and sound system are better,
but it still took a bit during the previews before the focus was in. Christina Ricci
is the quintessinal bad girl, amoral and manipulative--yet fascinating. Gay
relationships are a key part of the plot, but are dealt with discreetly. There is
no nudity, but there are allusions to body piercings. There are brief male-male
kisses, but those are less disturbing than Lyle Lovett kissing
Lisa Kudrow.
Lovett was his usual deadpan character, making offbeat remarks like "Sex
should be a sort of biological highlighter, making that person the first one you
notice in a crowded room." Lisa Kudrow was better than I expected. She did manage to
create a believable character.
